Lisl’s Significance

Elizabeth “Lisl” Scheu Close, in her own words, “did have an interesting life.” She was born in 1912 in Vienna; raised in a Red Vienna Socialist salon home designed by Adolf Loos; immigrated to the US in 1932 to complete her education at MIT; started a strictly Modernist practice in the late 1930s in Minneapolis; designed hundreds of gorgeous but modest custom homes; designed thousands of WWII era pre-fab houses; continued her father's advocacy of "housing for all"; designed for the environment before sustainability was a term; and was active in civic life, particularly music organizations. She lived to the age of 99; her life held a mirror to the arc of the 20th century.

Lisl’s architecture is well-loved in Minnesota and awareness of her career is growing in her native Austria. But her story and impact should be widely known. The medium of film can welcome the audience into the sites and spaces she designed, while explaining the opportunities and challenges that shaped her career and life.
